Objective To describe the causative agents, clinical and pathological characteristics of chronic drug-induced liver disease in order to improve the diagnosis and treatment.Methods 51 patients with chronic drug-induced liver disease admitted to our hospital from 2001-2008. The patients were evaluated according to their history of drug use, clinical features, pathological characteristics, liver function tests and serum markers, and the patients' responses to withdrawal drug abuse. Results Cholestatic liver disease was found to be the most frequent diagnosis among chronic drug-induced liver disease patients diagnosed clinically. The drugs which induced chronic liver diseases were traditional Chinese herbal medicine (27.5%) , gastroenteritis drugs (11.8%) , analgesic-antipyretic drugs (11.8%) , and others. 29 patients with liver histology tests were exhibited series of characteristics different from other liver diseases. From the total patients evaluated 32 were cured and 19 were improved.Conclusion Traditional Chinese herbal medicine, gastroenteritis drugs and analgesic-antipyretic drugs are common etiological agents of CDILD. Pathological characteristics of chronic drug induced liver disease are different from other liver diseases.
