Preliminary effect of autologous bone marrow stem cells transplantation for liver failure

Objective To evaluate the preliminary effect of autologous bone marrow stem cells transplantation for liver failure.Methods Twelve patients with liver failure were studied.100-200 ml bone marrow from each patient was harvested in aseptic condition.After isolation and purification by density gradient centrifugation, the stem cells were obtained and transplanted into the liver via hepatic artery.All patients were injected hepatic growth factor for 1-2 weeks.Clinical symptoms and signs and liver function and prothrombin time were checked after l, 2, 3 and 6 months of transplantation respectively.Results After transplantation, clinical symptoms and signs and laboratory data of 9 patients were improved and levels of albumin were increased significantly.Complications and serious side effects were not observed.Conclusion The treatment for liver failure by transplantation of autologous bone marrow stem cells is safe and effective.
