Case-control study of two different embolization agents in the superselective arterial embolization of hepatic hemangiomas

Objective To assess the clinical efficacy of superselective hepatic arterial embolization with Pingyangmycin lipiodol emulsion or Embosphere particles for patients with hepatic cavernous hemangioma.Methods Forty patients with hepatic cavernous hemangioma were randomly divided into two groups.Twenty cases in group A were treated with superselective arterial embolization with Pingyangmycin lipiodol emulsion, whereas the 20 cases in group B were embolized by Embosphere particles.The efficiency of the two groups were compared and analyzed.Results The clinical symptoms had all deviated or disappeared in all patients after both the treatments.All the cases were performed CT after six months post embolization.In group A, the sizes of hemangiomas were decreased in 15 cases, stabilized in 5 cases and no inefficient case;In group B, the sizes of hemangiomas were decreased in 16 cases, stabilized in 4 cases and no inefficient case.Statistical analysis showed no significant difference between the two groups (P>0.05) .No severe complications such as gallbladder injury, bile duct stricture, and liver failure developed during and after therapy.Conclusion Superselective hepatic arterial embolization with Pingyangmycin lipiodol emulsion or Embosphere particles are effective and safet method for patients with hepatic cavernous hemangioma.a.
