Formation, secretion and excretion of bile acids are complex process.Both hepatocytes and cholangiocytes might ingest and secrete the composition of bile acids, mainly depending on their membrane transporters which play an important role in its pathological and physiological processes.Cholestasis can result from either a functional defect in bile formation at the level of the hepatocytes or from impairment in bile secretion and flow at the bile duct level.In this paper, mechanism of bile secretion, excretion, regulation and cholestasis was reviewed.
